Lost: 5 stone ½ pound**
“My sister Miriam wanted to shift a bit of weight after having a baby and she asked me if I’d like to go along to Weight Watchers with her. I was never one for being told what to eat or what to do, but I said I’d give it a try for her sake.
When I went along to the class and stood up on the scales, I discovered I was over 17 stone. I couldn’t believe it; it was a massive shock and woke me up completely – as a father, I worried about having a heart attack and not being there for my kids, so that’s when I decided that the weight had to go, and I haven’t looked back since.
I went home and had a look at what I was eating; crisps and chips and all that sort of junk. I had a chat with Kathleen about it, and although she was never one for eating vegetables and the like, we started to buy them more. So I began eating a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables, especially turnip, which I think is brilliant. I went off sugar, switched from coke to drinking lots of water and cut down on sweets and chocolate. It was a massive change and it was hard at first, but when I saw the results I kept on going.
My leader, Deirdre, is fantastic; she’s almost like a second mammy to me! She was always there for me whenever I needed to text or call her; she’s out of this world. I never used to eat breakfast, but Deirdre told me that I couldn’t carry on like that, so I made sure to have a bit of toast in the mornings, and for the rest of the day I had lots of veg and plenty of fruit. If ever I slipped up, I’d be out the next day working it off.
