Lost: 4st 9lbs**
Kellyann Slater has struggled with her weight since she was a teenager. She’s tried all the diets going, even the disgusting cabbage soup one, but as she tells us, Weight Watchers was the only one that worked – long-term!
From the age of about 16, I carried weight. I joined Weight Watchers when I was 20 and got to goal, then I was hit with a lot of health issues including an underactive thyroid. In 2014, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and was put on some strong medication including high dose steroids. Within months, the stones began to pile on. At my heaviest, I was close to 15 stone, despite being only 5ft 2. I used to makes excuses – ‘oh I’ve an underactive thyroid, I’ll never be able to lose weight’, or ‘I am on steroids’. They’re all excuses. And yet here I am on the journey, on steroids, losing weight.
I live in a three storey house, and before I lost weight it was a challenge for me to make it up the stairs. I feared I was going to be hit with diabetes, or high cholesterol. So to be improve my health and enjoy my kids (Max, 10 Scott, 6), I said enough was enough….In January of this year, along with my friend Vanessa, I joined Allison Moore’s Weight Watchers class in Balbriggan and I can honestly say, it was the best decision I have ever made. I feel so much healthier. I can now play chasing and football with the kids. I’ve gone from barely able to walk to the local shop to a daily 8km walk. I have been discharged from two consultants and I am no longer at risk of getting another illness like diabetes or high blood pressure.
Also, I am a lot more active and my arthritis is much improved. Obviously I have my bad days, when my feet and my hands are sore, but definitely it has made a difference. My GP was astounded recently at my weight loss. I told her all about the WW plan, and she praised it.
Now at goal having lost 4st 9lbs the only downside is that my addiction to clothes has gotten a lot worse. It was my birthday recently and my husband brought me out shopping, and I picked up a Size 8 jacket. What a feeling!
It’s not just me that Weight Watchers has helped. My whole family’s health has improved. My husband has lost two stone alongside me. He’s so aware of the plan. He’s cut back on all the unhealthy stuff. He’s a taxi man so he would have been eating out of garages, now I send him off with turkey burgers, healthy yogurts, and salads and off he goes.
I love cooking. It’s great trying all Weight Watchers’ ‘fakeaways’ recipes, and being adventurous. My favourite recipe to cook is a chicken curry using mayflower sauce. It has proved a huge hit with the family and friends.
The advice I would give to people who are about to embark on a weight loss journey is that there can’t be excuses. You have to look at the bigger picture. You have to look to the future. What sort of future are you going to have if you don’t make the choice? Give the plan a chance. Don’t expect things to happen overnight – just because I lost 4 stone in 10 months. Don’t compare yourself to others. You’re on your own journey. Do it for yourself. I was lucky to join with Vanessa. People have asked are we competitive with each other? The answer is no. What we are is supportive of each other. We celebrate each other’s successes.
Kellyann on Flex
I was absolutely thrilled to be able try Flex. I am loving the new zero Smartpoints foods like chicken eggs and 0% fat plain yogurt. It’s allowed me to experiment with and mix up my recipes that all the family enjoy. To be able to rollover Smartpoints to add to your weeklies is the best part. It just makes it much more liveable and enjoyable. The name suits it perfect as it’s so flexible.
